Penguin English Library: Part 1

Today Penguin in the UK releases their new collection of Penguin English Library classic series. My friend is all over this series because of the lovely covers and asked me if the bookstore where I used to work will sell the series or not. I told her I would check it for so I started searching for the ISBNs in order to make sure the bookstore people know exactly which series I’m talking about.

The first place I went to was their website (the one above). But it didn’t have it. Or if it did, there’s too much Facebook interfacing going on there for me to find it. To be honest, I find it highly annoying when book websites don’t have ISBNs. Perhaps I’m the one who’s being very nitpicky about the whole thing but in this case, I think listing the ISBN is very important. The reason is, with so many versions of these classic books out there (Penguin alone must have at least 5 different versions of the same title, let alone from other publishers), you need to be sure which one you’re ordering. Even if you order online and make certain of the book through its cover images, it can still be very frustrating when you type “JANE AUSTEN PERSUASION PENGUIN” and have ten different versions, none that shows up is the one from this English Library series you want. So, to be absolutely sure when buying and ordering a book, I prefer a book website to list the ISBN instead of urging us to rate a book by putting how many stars.

Luckily, the admin for their Twitter account, @PenguinEngLib, was kind enough to point out that we can search it through Penguin UK’s main website. Check out:

Before they answered my inquiry, though, I went to Amazon UK and made my own listing. More on that later.

And before we talk about my listing, perhaps you’re wondering why you should buy these books if you’ve (most probably) read them already?

They’re pretty standard classic books that the curriculum dictates you to read in class but the covers are pretty. If you’re a collector of classics based on the covers, this series comes highly recommended. The covers are reminiscent of Penguin’s other classic series, the Clothbound Classics, which are in hardcover and priced at £12.99 – £14.99  each. So, can’t afford Clothbound Classics? Go for the equally classy covers of Penguin English Library.

A bit of warning for serious readers: a friend of mine who’s an English teacher once complained that Penguin likes to abridge their texts. If you put more importance in the content of the books and not the aesthetics, please  check whether the books in this Penguin English Library series contain the abridged or unabridged versions of the text. (Tip: if you’re in a bookstore, grab a Wordsworth or Oxford edition and compare the text inside. If you’re buying online, asking around to people who’ve bought the books might help.)

[EDIT 27.04.2012: Once again,  @PenguinEngLib‘s admin has responded to my warning above by saying that the text is complete and unabridged. I am very pleased to hear this. However, if you’re still not sure about it, just follow my aforementioned tip.]

Talking about my listing, as you can see I’m a bit obssessive compulsive with it (so sue me, I used to work in a bookstore doing listings all day long). I made the list not only for the first 20 titles released today on 26 April, but the ones that Amazon UK indicated will be released next month, in June and July. They are listed alphabetically by author. I included the covers so it can be like a proper catalogue, although some of the images may be low-res and blurry.

May this help you in your book browsing/shopping… happy reading and revisiting the classics!
